If the steering wheel controls (SWC) on your Subaru Impreza WRX (2014-2021) are still not functioning after doing the basic troubleshooting steps (e.g., ensuring plugs are correctly connected and the CAN bus profile is set correctly), follow these steps as a last resort to manually wire the SWC. This guide ensures proper wiring and connection to restore SWC functionality.

Step-by-Step Guide

1. Locate the Main Harness and Power Plug:

Identify the main power plug on the VHEDIA harness. This is the connector that links your car’s factory harness to the CAN bus module and the head unit’s main 20-pin connector.

2. Inspect the KEY1 and KEY2 Wires on the VHEDIA Harness:

On the VHEDIA harness, locate the KEY1 and KEY2 wires. These are typically grey (KEY1) and grey/black (KEY2).

3. Prepare the Wiring for Connection:

  • Cut the KEY1 and KEY2 wires (grey and grey/black) from the VHEDIA harness.
  • Ensure the ends of the wires are stripped and ready for connection.

4. Connect to the 20-Pin Plug:

Locate the brown (KEY1) and brown/black (KEY2) wires on the head unit’s 20-pin connector.

5. Make the Connection:

  • Connect the grey wire (KEY1) from the VHEDIA harness to the brown wire (KEY1) on the 20-pin connector.
  • Connect the grey/black wire (KEY2) from the VHEDIA harness to the brown/black wire (KEY2) on the 20-pin connector.
  • Secure the connections using soldering or crimp connectors to ensure a stable and reliable connection.

6. Test the Steering Wheel Controls:

  • Reconnect the harness to the head unit and the car’s factory wiring.
  • Turn on the vehicle and test the steering wheel controls to ensure they are functioning correctly.

7. Finalise the Installation:

Once the SWC functionality is confirmed, secure all connections with electrical tape or heat shrink tubing to prevent loose connections.

If the issue persists after following these steps, double-check all connections and consult VHEDIA support for further assistance.
